The disaster

The disaster is an artwork inspired by The great wave by Hokusai. During this two-week module, we had to make something that was important for you. I decided to make this work about the environment en trash littering. I deeply care about our planet and I find it horrible that i’s being treated so bad.

That’s why decide to make something to show this exact problem. The original artwork was about how the sea controlled humans and how scary nature could be. But that was made in 1820 and a lot has changed since then. Nowadays we don’t live with the same fears they did back then. Now we’re in control and by being that we’re destroying the oceans. We throw our trash in the sea and expect it to just fix itself. This is far from true and it’s becoming a really big problem. so bad that scientists believe that we won’t be able to eat any more food from the seas in a few years, cause of how much plastic and trash will be in the sea. I find this incredibly shocking and I want to help prevent this from happening. That’s why in my work you can see a big wave made out of plastic to show how scary that actually is. And let people think about the problem we’re facing.

More SLB by design

We have more SLB by design modules during the year. The most important part of it is to show what kind of designer you are. I care a lot about nature and the environment, that’s why I have done multiple projects about trash littering. I think reusing materials and creating art out of them is really inspiring, so I want to reuse as many of my used materials. You can see this back in one of my other projects, which was about covid littering and the problems we’re experiencing nowadays.

The painting

The last SLB by design module was about making. We were allowed to do whatever we want as long as we were making something. I decided to continue working with natural products and being sustainable but also tackling my perfectionism. For my work, I created a painting where I created every material needed myself, from paint to brushes and the canvas. it truly was a fascinating process and I’m very proud of how everything turned out!
