All tied up is the project that I am most proud of. I made this with my fellow student Amane van Elsacker. The module was called Speculatief Design and we choose to make an interactive experience. We’re both super proud of the artwork we created.
The interactive art installation is about mental disorders. It makes the invisible visible. We wanted to make something that would shock people and we definitely succeeded. In the installation, you no longer have control over your own body. You’re “all tied up” and have to struggle to do the easiest tasks like picking up cups and building a tower. And to make matters worse there is a tv screen with people staring at you and it plays an audio where you can hear people laughing and whispering. All to make you feel as uncomfortable as possible.
This is because people with an actual mental disorder have to endure that every day. They get laughed at, bullied, and starred at just cause there different than the “norms” we have. We found that horrible because the person has no control over their actions and most of the time they hate that they do things differently. So to break that stigma we want to show a “normal” person how it feels to live without control over yourself and to feel uncomfortable for doing something differently even though you can’t help it.
Expo
To make everything more exciting, we have been chosen to show our artwork at an expo. This expo is in them of “Proud to be ashamed” which fits our work perfectly! I’m super proud that something that I made has received such positive responses. and I’m super grateful for all the attention it gets because that is exactly what we want for this artwork and what makes it so special.
